On Wednesday Brian informed me that club fees run from January to January. What should we do about this? We are all at the moment in arrears with our subs. Should we call a meeting to discuss what to do? Some folk signed up late and obviously haven't got full value for money. Some guys haven't paid a thing yet although the club has forked out the cash! Some folk are not yet members of RNOC at all. All thoughts welcome.

Hi, Jangor
Brian was talking about calling a meeting regarding a dress code situation.
So now thats two reasons to call one.

First, fees. All members to pay their way on time. New potential members to have a fixed (cooling off) period to consider joining - one month?. Then it's pay up or ship out. By the way, how was it that one of my Club Ch opponents wasn't a member? As for RNOC renewal, I cannot recall the January date at the outset (Jun 05?). We can check that no discount for a part-year membership is available. I believe the RNOC is about to lose its MoD subsidy, so I suspect they have cash flow issues of their own. My view is that, when compared with previous fee regimes, we're getting a reasonable deal, so I wd be happy with paying my way now. Overall, the question of non-payment is simply a matter of poor financial management. Answer, get a grip and stop being so 'nice' about things!

Second, dress code. I presume we're talking about HMS Collingwood WO/CPOs' Mess. Although as an ex-RN person. I think they are being somewhat pendantic, the fact is is that it's their mess, and if we wish to play Fareham CC there, we have to conform. Let's do it and stop whinging. To help, get a copy of the dress rules from Fareham CC!

Meeting: suggest committee with a cast-iron agenda to stop rambling and lack of focus!

I agree with Richard; we don't need a meeting. We go by whatever rules we set out about membership fees in the meeting at the beginning of the season. The membership is already so cheap that it makes no sense for it to be cheaper just because you join late. Also, Portsmouth chess club definitely doesn't need a meeting because of Fareham chess club's dress code. If you're gunna play an away game to Fareham you need to wear shoes and trousers; simple as. Dress code at Fareham no longer exists, they have changed venue. I guess this shows the power of our forum and how seriously the world views our sensible and even handed discussions.

Fees are NOW DUE for RNOCC. Bring your cash on Wednesday! Inflation means that it is now a pound more than last year.

Let's face it, membership fees are ridiculously cheap and the venue is great.

Yeah, after discussions about changing venue about a year ago, I no longer feel there's any need to move since the existing venue is ideal.  I think what we really need is a good website which will come up on any search engine search and will inform players of where to go, because I'm confident we'd have had a couple of dozen more new players coming along to try out the club in the last year if we had a website.  In a few weeks I might try making this myself but I'm strictly a beginner at website development at the moment, although I can hopefully learn quickly.
