Best Defence to d4?

Best defence to d4 or preferred defence to d4? Confused
Edd

The Slav is a variation of the QGD.
bjames

slav qgd

Well that may be true there are many alternatives when playing the qgd - I was more looking at d5 and e6 with other independant lines like tarrasch or something like that whereas the slav is d5 and c6 - the semi slav is more from the qgd whereas the slav doesnt have the go with e6 or delay this move and follow up with b5 and a queenside assault
Edd

Yeah that's true; the Slav doesn't have to be a variation of the e6 queen's gambit declined, but I think that the slav 2...c6 is considered a QGD because it is a declination of the queen's gambit, and the slav is listed in the queen's gambit declined section of the opening encyclopedia I have (Modern Chess Openings). Anyway, sorry for being pedantic. Smile

The move order 1.c4 c6 2.d4 d5 is fully independent of the Queen's Gambit if Black avoids e6, no?

The is the starting position of the Slav. The Slav is a type of Queen's Gambit Declined. You are thinking of the Classical Queen's Gambit declined characterised by e6. I suppose it is semantic and sometimes someone may be referring to the Classical Queen's Gambit Declined when they refer to the "Queen's Gambit Declined", as opposed to any of the Queen's Gamit Declined systems including the Classical and Slav.
