Does anyone have any suggestions about ways we can improve our club? By that I mean improving the club itself as well as our grades. I was thinking along the following lines (although let's not constrain ourselves):

- having a centralised (and readily available) list of away venues with maps!

- having a centralised (and readily available) contacts list so that we can organise our matches more effectively?

- above point may reduce missed (wins by default) club champ games?

- buying some cheap bics (pens not rich tea) for the store cupboard?

...and stuff like that.

Is this too broad a subject?

Hello Sniper,

Brian & Ian put a contact list together at the beginning of the season did you not get one?

I am with you on the cheap bics, but only if there lucky ones. Very Happy

Club newsletter - with peoples requests on openings/endings etc game of week from players this year? Could be emailed around or paper copy. People could email the editor for requests - peoples contributions? Any news on upcoming tournaments/things happening around the chess world. Book reviews? Club tournament results.

Agree with bics as well.

Other than that club is good venue.

Would like more competitions going on so you have regular important chess games especially if we get relegated from one of the divisions. Whether it be rapidplay or long games.

Hey Barrie,

club newsletter a good idea, why not make it part of the portmouth web site or the forum?
Also thinking further more on snipers idea about maps for venues, why not includes these on the website.

Competitions you can never have enough so i am all in favour of more of them.

Yep those are all good ideas. I have a list of contact information which I handed out at the start of the season but perhaps not to everyone. Folk mislay them or even claim they didn't get a copy! Of course I never put a copy on the notice board! Will sort that out on Wednesday. If someone gets a box of pens and a receipt then they will be reimbursed by the club. I noe foresee 20 boxes of pens in the cupboard so no shortage of them for a few years. The news letter is a good plan, volunteer to do it needed though.

Also I've copied some stuff out for Gary and John on starting out a game. I don't know how well it's been received yet but if it goes down well I might be inspired to do a bit more. The only thing is I don't think I'm a good enough teacher to explain things simply enough and after 21:00 the drink has made me unintelligible.

Looking for help on openings especially for beginners - http://chess.fm/
Pete Tamburro shows some of the lines for black playing the 2 knights defence. Very good as far as I'm concerned. Like the opening plus he tends to have a new line for examination every now and then.

To improve the club we need to attract as many new players as possible, and to at least grow in number even if we don't grow in strength immediately.
