I've been talking to come club members about a new website for Portsmouth Chess Club.
Here are my thoughts about what the website should be like:
A simple format with minimal loading time and simple layout, with clear links etc.
Easy to navigate and find out when the times for the club are and where the club is, perhaps with a simple map, but preferably without any anoying links to google satellite photos.
Updates of league results.
Updates on club championship.
Previous club champions and other historical records of the club.
Club members' tournament photos.
A game viewer that is clear and obvious to use, like the one used on the Hampshire chess website for the Hampshire Congress. Games of players at the club, and perhaps - for example - all the games played during a club championship. This would be very interesting.
And most importantly in my opinion, regular updates. There could for instance be more than one webmaster, but it would be ideal to have updates made very regularly and results uploaded within a few days at most of the matches or rounds of the club championship.
And I just remembered, it's important the website comes up on a google search.
A simple website made in this manner will undoubtedly increase the rate that new players come to the club. We have already had quite an influx in the last few months, and it would be great to see even more new players coming along after finding the website. I might add that I only joined the club a couple of years ago myself after searching in portsmouth chess club (on the assumption there would be a portsmouth chess club) and finding the old webpage (which is now no longer there) which instructed me on the opening times etc. If I hadn't found anything, I probably would have joined Fareham or Cosham for example, and the same may be true for several potential new members that we may have missed in this way over the last couple of years.
